Act 2, Scene 1

Shakespeare uses many language techniques throughout ‘Macbeth’, one of these being personification.

When Macbeth walks towards his destination for murder, he says “Thou sure and firm-set earth,Hear not my steps, which way they walk, for fear Thy very stones prate of my whereabout, And take the present horror from the time.”

When we analyse this quote, we find that when he is talking, he mentions the ground and is asking for it not to hear him walking. This is giving the ground and the Earth the sense of hearing which is a human characteristic. This proves that he is feeling guilty and doesn’t want to get caught.
