Shakespeare uses many language techniques throughout ‘Macbeth’, one of these being metaphors. Just before the castle had found out about King Duncan’s death, Lennox was talking with Macbeth and says this “The night has been unruly: where we lay, Our chimneys were blown down; and, as they say, Lamentings heard i’ the air; strange screams of death”. Within this quote, many metaphors are used. ‘Our chimneys were blown down’ is an example of this. The reason that Lennox used these metaphors is because he felt a strange feeling that night and the earthquake was a factor of that. Plus, when he says ‘Lamentings heard i’ the air; strange screams of death’, he is talking about the night not being silent like most other nights and goes on to say later that the Owl didn’t stop howling and that he heard strange voices.
