Act 3 scene 1

During this scene in Macbeth, Macbeth uses many metaphors during his soliloquy to show his true feelings. “They hail’d him father to a line of kings: Upon my head they placed a fruitless crown, and put a barren sceptre in my gripe, thence to be wrench’d with an unlineal hand, no son of mine succeeding. This shows Macbeth’s feelings in a way that hadn’t been seen before. When he gets presented with the crown, they announce that Banquo’s sons will be the next in line to the throne. This therefore puts an idea in Macbeth’s head that his crown means nothing, hence calling it fruitless. So he ends up plotting to kill the sons of Banquo along with their father to keep the line of Kings in the family.
